Very interesting to see these new sorts of machines being reviewed.  If I read the first look correctly, this is basically a single-boiler machine with a thermoblock added on for steaming.  Given that a few of the coffeegeeks that I respect most have commented that they have noticed great improvements from going from a silvia to a HX machine, and that you lucky northern hemisphere guys seem to have great HX machines available in the same price range as this machine, this seems to be a brave offering at the price point.

1st-line Equipment, LLC started marketing the Ascaso Steel Uno Versatile in June of 2006. Although Versatile is in its name, the Ascaso Steel Uno is an extraordinary home-model espresso machine. The features found on no other machines in its price class are a the low water cut-off switch under the reservoir when the water is low and b the temperature gauge which helps users achieve repeatable results of espresso extraction by focusing in on the boielr temperature. This espresso machine is also satifactory for a small office environemt where E.S.E. single dose pods need to be used.

There is approximately 30-60 second wait time to go from coffee mode to steam mode (after depressing the steam switch in). After steaming milk, the user can depress the steam switch out. After placing a cup under the steam wand, the user can rotate the steam knob to the on position, and the pump will automatically activate so that the ‘too hot steamed water’ exits and the temperature of the boiler can be brought down to make additional espresso.

Also, when shopping around, it is a good idea to confirm that the model you are shopping for is the Steel Uno Professional. If it does not state Professional, some of the features listed below are different on the non-professional versions which have smaller brass boilers or smaller sized groupheads.
