The Rancilio Silvia espresso / cappuccino machine brings commercial quality to the home at an unbeatable price. The Silvia is built with only the finest quality materials for years of top performance. The Silvia produces outstanding espresso with rich crema.

Price Range: $575 - $915

From Rancilio, one of the most respected names in commercial espresso machines comes one of the most respected espresso machines ever introduced for the home market. Miss Silvia has garnered quite a bit of praise from critics and consumers alike, becoming a present day legend. This new version is now pod adaptable with an optional pod adapter kit sold separately. Although Silvia is classified as a home espresso maker, it sports many of the features found in semi-commercial and commercial espresso machines, but at a more affordable price. Rancilio has concentrated on performance features including a commercial like portafilter handle, a large marine brass boiler for a home machine and a 3-way solenoid valve. All of these features are beautifully housed in a quality stainless steel body for a true commercial look. Although we have high praise for the Silvia, it may not be the espresso machine for everyone. Keep in mind that with a commercial like design, proper espresso brewing technique is critical. There are no pressurized portafilters here to help you along. The right grind and correct tamp are important prerequisites for brewing a perfect shot of espresso. You also may want to let the machine warm up longer to achieve optimal temperature stability. If you are up to the task, the results can be wonderful.

Features Include:

Commercial Like Portafilter Handle. The Silvia portafilter is much like those found in commercial machines. With a 58mm diameter, the shape of the basket and surface area of the coffee are similar to commercial machines, providing similar resistance to the hot water during the brewing process. The closer the conditions to a commercial machine, the closer the result to a commercial machine. Remember, for good espresso, time, temperature and volume of the shot are important factors. The larger size also means more thermal stability.

Group Head. The portafilter fits into the grouphead ?which is also the part delivering the water to the grinds. Again, thermal stability is an important factor. Chrome plated marine brass construction produces excellent thermal stability for a home machine and is durable enough to last for years. The screen uniformly delivers water to the grinds for proper extraction.

Boiler. The marine brass boiler boasts a 12 oz. capacity (quite large for a home machine). Steam is ample for frothing and the boiler regenerates quickly for multiple espressos when entertaining.

Steam Wand. A well designed single hole steam wand, combined with a powerful boiler produces ample steam volume, duration and velocity for quick and effective frothing. The straight forward design does not have any froth aiding gadgets, but rather relies on a good design for great results.

Heated Cup Warming Surface. The top of the machine is perfect for heating your espresso cup with the heat generated from the boiler. (Cold ceramic cups can be the death of a good espresso).

Simple Controls. The semi-automatic design means straight forward controls. Turn the pump on to start brewing and turn it off to stop. Turn the steam switch on to reach steam temperature. Turn it off and run hot water through the steam wand to reduce temperature for brewing again. Hot water can also be used for preheating cups or even tea. Indicator lights let you know when the temperature is right for brewing or steaming.

Water Reservoir. The water reservoir can be filled while in the machine or removed for easy filling at the sink. A large 67 oz. capacity means plenty of espressos or cappuccinos before you need to refill.

A note about grind. Since the Silvia does not have a pressurized filter or filter handle, proper grind is important to achieving a great shot of espresso. We recommend a grinder that can produce a consistent even and fine grind. We recommend the Rancilio Rocky grinder, or for lower budgets, the Solis Maestro.

Included: The Silvia comes with a coffee scoop, tamper, a single and double filter, and user manual. Warranty is 1 year.

Decision Time. Is the Silvia right for you? Although we thing the Silvia is a great machine at the price, it may not be for everyone. If you are willing to put the care and time into brewing a quality espresso, yearn to become a skilled barista and would like a quality commercial machine in your home, but don’t have the budget for a commercial or semi-commercial machine, then the Silvia may be the machine for you. If you want excellent espresso, but are looking for less of a challenge, then you may consider another machine. For easier use in a semi-commercial-like machine, you may consider a Solis SL70 or SL90 for the option of using either a pressurized or non-pressurized filter. The SL90 is also an automatic machine that will dose the volume of water in your espresso. For more convenience, consider a superautomatic or double boiler home machine. If budget permits, a semi-commercial or small commercial machine can offer a larger boiler and a heat exchange system. A semi-commercial or commercial machine can normally brew and froth simultaneously. Larger boilers can mean more steam production and beefier machines can offer better thermal stability. The tradeoff is, of c ourse, price. Consider Pasquini or Astra machines.
