The Capresso Coffee TEAM S is a top-of-the-line unit, with all the bells and whistles.

This model, which is an upgrade of Capresso’s popular Coffee TEAM Luxe, uses quality materials and advanced features to enhance its already superb product. Like its predecessor, the Coffee TEAM S is a combination grinder/brewer. What makes this unit stand out from a crowd, however, is its superior solid-steel conical burr grinder. The burr grinder crushes the beans, rather than chopping them, to release more of the robust coffee flavor.

The Coffee TEAM S has a laundry list of specialty features, including a digital display, clock/timer, brew-pause, 2-hour auto-shutoff, brew-strength selector and charcoal water filter.

We have to say, this machine makes one terrific cup of coffee. Even with the grinding time factored in, the brew cycle takes less than 10 minutes for a full 10-cup pot. The finished brew emerges hot — about 180 degrees Fahrenheit — and flavorful. We also noticed that fewer grounds were needed to achieve the same bold flavor.

Another thing we liked about this machine is that we did not have to measure out the coffee beans. The bean container holds up to 6 ounces (1/3 pound) of beans or enough for 20-30 cups of coffee. So you can simply pour the beans into the container and close the lid. The machine determines the correct amount to dispense based on the number of cups selected.

Upon first glance, this unit seems somewhat complicated, and a bit daunting to use. The instructions are very thorough, however, and a video tape is included, which demonstrates step by step how to use the machine. Actually, once the initial setup tasks are completed, such as installing the water filtration cartridge and adding beans to the bean container, it is fairly simple to start a brew cycle. The most important thing is to be sure the filter basket, with its permanent gold-tone filter, is properly positioned under the grinder. Otherwise, you’ll end up with a mess of grounds and hot water on your counter.

The unit’s control panel consists of nine pushbutton controls, which manage the various functions, from setting the clock, to programming a delayed brew cycle, to adjusting the strength of the finished coffee. You can personalize your coffee by adjusting the number of cups and the strength (mild, regular or strong).

The one feature we were not crazy about was the design of the carafe. When pouring from a full carafe, we noticed that the coffee tends to spill over the lip of the carafe if poured too quickly. Pouring a little more slowly solves the problem.

You’ll pay a premium price for this unit, but those who insist on superior quality will appreciate the difference in the taste of their coffee.

Pros: Solid-steel conical burr grinder, full-range of specialty features
Cons: Noisy during grind cycle (approximately 30 seconds), carafe tends to spill if poured too quickly
