“Espresso†is an Italian word. Many people believe that it translates as “express†and that espresso coffee is called this because of the fact that in cafes it is traditionally brewed when a customer orders and is delivered straight to them.
However, according to others the word actually means “pressed out†and refers to the fact that espresso coffee is made by using either water-pressure or steam-pressure built up inside the espresso machine.
Espresso is a strong, concentrated, richly-flavoured black coffee, and is the basis for other forms of coffee such as latte and cappuccino. Because of its richness and thick consistency, it’s usually served in small cups.
Good espresso coffee should have a layer of creamy golden froth which stays on top of your coffee until you have finished it. This is known as “cremaâ€.
Cappuccino is a type of coffee traditionally consisting of ? espresso, ? steamed milk and ? frothed milk. You can also dust the top of your cappuccino with chocolate, cocoa powder or cinnamon for added flavour.
The name cappuccino is believed to have derived from the name for the habits worn by monks in Italy’s Capuchin order, which were brown with a white hood.
Espresso coffee makers work by using pressure to push either water or steam through ground coffee. This releases the flavour and the aroma of the essential oils in the coffee beans when the cup of coffee is produced.
Traditionally espresso machines can only be used to make espresso coffee, but most modern espresso coffee machines can also be used to make cappuccino, as they have a separate spout for frothing milk. Sometimes these machines are known as espresso/cappuccino coffee makers.
The products, which will be offered in cans, include: Caffe, a chilled espresso-based coffee with no milk; Cappuccino, an Illy espresso blended with milk and dark cacao; and Latte Macchiato, a smooth Illy espresso with milk.
The Illy agreement is significant for Coca-Cola because the ready-to-drink coffee category is a fast-growing segment, and PepsiCo has held the top spot in the U.S. through a joint venture with Starbucks. Coca-Cola has deals with Caribou and Godiva for ready-to-drink coffees, but Illy provides another opportunity to grab market share.
The venture’s launch will be through Coca-Cola Hellenic, Coca-Cola’s Greek bottling partner. Markets include Austria, Croatia, Greece and Ukraine. But Illy and Coca-Cola said they plan to expand into additional countries in Europe, Asia, North America, Eurasia and the Pacific in 2008 and 2009. Coca-Cola and Illy announced in October they would work together on ready-to-drink coffees.
“When we announced the partnership between the Coca-Cola Co. and Illy a few months ago, we committed to deliver the perfect ready to drink espresso experience,” said Muhtar Kent, Coca-Cola president and chief operating officer, in a press release.
“Today, we believe we have delivered on that promise with an authentic Italian coffee experience. I look forward to this partnership delivering these great brands across the globe and enhancing our global leadership in the fast growing RTD coffee category.”
